The documentary film « What is INDIE ? » is a candid look inside the world of the independent musicianMusiciannot to be confused with « drummer » and sometimes « trombonist » ; lowest member of the « entertainment industry » hierarchy ; poor, starving, sometimes homeless person, often with meth or heroin addiction ; hearing-impaired and sometimes tone deaf ; has cool clothes and can sleep with nearly any woman who sees him onstage, even if he can’t play very well ; if schooled institutionally, may go on to become unsuccessful at teaching and eventually commit suicide ; DJ who can’t scratch. Through interesting inteviews and insightful narrative, the film defines the concepts of « indie » and looks at the changing landscape of the music industry.
Hailed as ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ by artists worldwide, the one hour documentary features interviews with twenty artists including Ember Swift, Paul Cargnello and Tim Rideout.
It also features indie music experts including CD Baby founder Derek Sivers, Sonicbids founder Panos Panay and Suzanne Glass, founder of Indie-Music.com.
Directed by Dave Cool and self-financed through his record label Stand Alone Records, the documentary was filmed in Montreal, New York City, Boston and Toronto.
