How to Enable a 16 Beat Loop Length
The Kaossilator normally only allows recording of an 8 beat loop. Here’s how to double it to 16.
- turn off the Kaossilator
- hold down the BPM and Loop buttons
- turn the unit on with those two buttons pressed - you will see the letters “DLY” displayed
- release the buttons
- press BPM and Loop once more, and see the new found number “16” in the Loop Length selection
Pros
- you get twice the loop length
- when changing the Loop Length, the unit will record these moves and effects destructively. Bug or feature? Watch this video ] and decide for yourself
- you are now l33t haxx0r for finding cool shit
Cons
- you can no longer use “Fix” mode (the extra 8 beats of memory are used up already)
- you can’t see the beat counter
- you can’t restart playback of the loop from the start - the “clock” is always running. If you’re trying to synch the KO-1 to another instrument, forget using this mode
- when changing the Loop Length, the unit will record these moves and effects destructively. Bug or feature? Watch this video ] and decide for yourself
Other Notes
- this hidden feature has been (erroneously?) called “debug mode” in a few articles
- to reset the unit’s loop length and restore all the features to defaults, switch the Kaossilator off then on again.
Other Resources
- Korg forum thread on this topic
- you can actually see someone switching on the mode in FuttFel’s video on YouTube
- this guy plays Smoke on the Water using the 16 beat loop length
How To Run the Kaossilator Through an ER-1 Gate
Disheartened by the lack of MIDI or synch or the Kaossilator? Hiro and Splurt have come up with a whacky work-around.
