Performing a brand of live, improvised, electronic music known as “Live PA,” Tim combines his talents as multi-instrumentalist and electronic music producer to create rich musical hybrids that speak to traditional players and DJs alike. Also a critically acclaimed recording artist, award-winning drummer, composer and music producer, Rideout is a true digital Renaissance man, as comfy on drums, microphone and piano as he is accepting his inner DJ DJ Not to be confused with “musician” or “talented artist”; plays music by inserting small hydrocarbon disc in digital player or analog turntable; manipulates sound and media in alledged “performance” of music, often using a laptop or other pre-recorded source; post-millenium equivalent of drugged-out rock star, but cooler and with better drugs; most musicians are envious of the DJ because he actually makes a living while they still deliver pizza or work at the music store; gets more chicks than drummers .
A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada) Tim moved to Montreal in 1988 to study jazz drums, receiving his Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University. He established himself as a world-class studio musician Musician not to be confused with “drummer” and sometimes “trombonist”; lowest member of the “entertainment industry” hierarchy; poor, starving, sometimes homeless person, often with meth or heroin addiction; hearing-impaired and sometimes tone deaf; has cool clothes and can sleep with nearly any woman who sees him onstage, even if he can’t play very well; if schooled institutionally, may go on to become unsuccessful at teaching and eventually commit suicide; DJ who can’t scratch , accompanist and ensemble member through extensive travel with international entertainers, bands and cruise ship orchestras in venues from Montreal to France, Alaska and New Mexico.
But, before the drums came the piano, the saxophone and … the Commodore 64. From a young age, this Maritimer was as much enjoying all things computer-related as he was a bluegrass jam at a summertime family reunion. Showing an early affinity for both the technological and instrumental sides of music, Tim started piano at age six, owned his first computer by age eleven and was experimenting with synthesizers and multi-track recording by the time he was fifteen.
Now an accomplished artist, successful entrepreneur and “digital renaissance man,” he subscribes jointly to the technologies of the samplist and the tenets of the schooled musician Musician not to be confused with “drummer” and sometimes “trombonist”; lowest member of the “entertainment industry” hierarchy; poor, starving, sometimes homeless person, often with meth or heroin addiction; hearing-impaired and sometimes tone deaf; has cool clothes and can sleep with nearly any woman who sees him onstage, even if he can’t play very well; if schooled institutionally, may go on to become unsuccessful at teaching and eventually commit suicide; DJ who can’t scratch . His live performances contain equal elements of musical convention and techno toy experimentation. His CDs are recorded on a combination of old-school analog gear, state-of-the-art digital equipment and “old crap” lying around his apartment. Rideout’s resulting high-quality recordings and live shows have garnered accolades from audiophiles, DJs, fans and media alike.
The foundation of Rideout’s unique approach to music creation lies in his skill at combining the seemingly dissonant doctrines of traditional instrumentalist and techno-geek Geek Not to be confused with freak; primarily solitary creature; habitats include living rooms, arcades and Dungeons & Dragons conventions; enjoys videogames, LOTR and Star Wars (except the really suxx0rz first three episodes) ; knows what’s cool even if others don’t get it; doesn’t give a shit who cares, because he’ll PWN their ass in a deathmatch anyways; chicks dig, even if they don’t admit . A classically schooled musician and avid technologist, he combines live instrumental performance with electronic production techniques, weaving elements of funky groove, hypnotic ambience, intelligence and humour into his art. Live or in studio, Rideout’s seemingly limitless musical palette imbues his performances and recordings with the sonic depth and stylistic originality of one truly impassioned by the creative process.
With three compact discs to his credit, feature film and television scores, videogame music, and countless appearances as studio drummer, instrumentalist and producer, Tim has his finger in the many pies of North America’s musical smorgasbord. His moniker has graced the credits of audio-visual productions from the likes of the CBC, Universal, The SciFi Channel, Alliance Atlantis, Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey Circus, and Ubisoft on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent. His myriad of talents has afforded him opportunities of great artistic diversity - from playing at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, to winning a New Mexico Music Award in Albuquerque and a Quebec Gemini Award (Gémeaux) nomination for Best Original Music in a Television Documentary. He has worked with such artists as Rob Lutes, Paul Cargnello, Andrea Revel, Denis Richard, Brasse Camarade, Chiwawa, ECMA nominee “Vetch” and Offenbach’s John McGale.
A happy father of two, Tim lives and creates at his private studio in the Plateau district of Montreal, Canada.
